Information: Challenges of the 100-million Philippine population

The Philippine population reached the 100-million mark on July 27, 2014, from the 98,909,981 recorded on January 2, 2014. Ranked as 12th most populous country in the world, the Philippines has 1.38% of the world’s population.

Listed above the Philippines in population are: China with 1,365,980,000 people; India, 1,247,500,000; United States, 318,508,000; Indonesia, 252,164,800; Brazil, 202,953,000; Pakistan, 188,020,000; Nigeria, 178,517,000; Bangladesh, 156,743,000; Russia, 146,068,400; Japan, 127,100,000; and Mexico, 119,713,203.

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said it sees a continuing population growth over the next 37 years. Three babies are born every minute in the Philippines, the PSA noted. It is estimated the population may reach103.7 million by 2015, 111.8 million by 2020, 128.1 million by 2030, and 141.7 million by 2040. The last population census in 2000 placed the population at 77.6 million.

The Commission on Population estimated that of 100 million Filipinos, youth make up 33% or about 19.2 million. The United Nations Population Fund said there is a need to respond to the rights and needs of young Filipinos by providing them with education, job opportunities, and life skills.

The government is committed to fight poverty and ensure that development reaches the poor. Even if the population is growing, what is important is to be able to tailor fit interventions to help the fifth quintile or poorest of the poor of the population to be able to get out of that demographic.

Historically, Philippine population growth rate increased near the end of the 20th Century and into the 21st Century. It used to be less than the population of Vietnam, but at turn of the century the populations of the two countries overlapped and the population of the former became speaker. Since then, Philippine population steadily rose. In 1950, it stood at 18,580,000, in 1960 at 26,272,000, and in 1970 at 35,805,000, until it reached 77,652,000 in 2000. Based on the country’s total land area and total population, the population density is estimated at 797.2 people per square mile.

The world’s massive population growth and increase in usage of resources threaten the ecosystem and may aggravate environmental woes such as rising levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide, global warming, and pollution. Globally, the human population exceeded 7 billion on October 31, 2011. It is projected to be eight billion by 2025-2030, and nine billion by 2045-2050.
