Climate Change & Oil

And though there is growing public consciousness in the United States about the serious threat it poses, there is less awareness about the huge impact climate change has in the global South. 182 million people in sub-Saharan Africa alone could die of disease directly attributable to climate change by the end of the century.

The reality is that large, industrialized nations including the United States bear most of the responsibility for the climate mess we’re in today. The tough truth is that the North has a climate debt to developing countries. Indeed, the financial impact of the climate debt the North owes the South vastly exceeds the value of the Northern loans that the South continues to repay.

Read Jubilee USA’s March 2009 report on the North’s climate debt to the South, the policies that provoked climate change by industrial nations and the financial institutions, and what we can do to help prevent disaster.
