Help the Victims and Veterans against War

Iraq Veterans Against the WarSupport Our Work: Donate Now

Dear Kevin,

On March 19, Iraq Veterans Against the War, the Organization for Women’s Freedom in Iraq, and the Federation of Workers’ Councils and Unions in Iraq launched the Right to Heal initiative.  Together, we are asking for a thematic hearing before the Inter-American Comission on Human Rights – but we need your help to get there, and time is running short. Take action now by signing this petition.

The Iraq war is not over for Iraqi civilians and U.S. veterans who continue to struggle with various forms of trauma and injury; for veterans and Iraqis who suffer the effects of environmental poisoning due to certain U.S. munitions and burn pits of hazardous material; and for a growing generation of orphans and people displaced by war.

We are requesting a hearing in front of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, a body of the Organization of American States. If the hearing is agreed to, this inter-American body will call forth U.S. government officials to respond to our case. Such a hearing will raise the profile of these issues, lend our movement legitimacy in pushing for recognition of our human rights, and be an important step in holding the U.S. government accountable for violating them.

Your signature will help demonstrate the wide spread support for such a hearing. Sign the petition here.

Iraqi women, many of whom have been widowed by the war, have been working tirelessly, canvassing for signatures in Baghdad, Samarra, and Hawija for this joint effort with great success.

We need to do our part and get as many signatures as we can by midnight on Sunday. The petition will be delivered to the court on Monday morning and will be used to persuade them to hear our case this fall. With your help, we can take the first steps toward holding the US government accountable for the tragic results of the war in Iraq. Please take a moment to sign the petition and share this email with your contacts.

We appreciate your support in this effort and will keep you informed about the upcoming hearing.

Thank you

Matt Howard and Maggie Martin
