Support Wind Power–Not Endless Wars for Petroleum!

Dear Kevin,

Your Senators will soon be considering amendments to S. 761, The Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act.  These amendments will affect the federal government’s future demand for renewable electricity, so we’d appreciate it if you’d weigh in and educate your Senators about what their votes will mean.

Senators Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), John Hoeven (R-ND) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) have introduced amendments that relate to Section 433 of a law passed in 2007: The Energy Improvement and Security Act.  Section 433 set a target for new or renovated federal buildings to be “carbon neutral” by 2030.  A “carbon neutral” building is designed to minimize the energy needed to operate, and source the energy that it does need from forms of electricity that do not produce greenhouse gas emissions, including wind.  Thus, the law promotes the use of renewable energy.

The amendment introduced by Senators Hoeven and Manchin would eliminate the carbon neutral building requirement.  This would reduce the demand for renewable energy in the future.  Thus, we ask you to urge your Senators to oppose the Hoeven/Manchin amendment to S. 761.

In contrast, the amendment introduced by Senator Whitehouse would preserve the central goal of Section 433 and improve the provision by clarifying that federal buildings could use renewable energy credits (RECs) in addition, or as an alternative to, purchasing emissions-free electricity to comply.  So, we ask you to urge your Senators to support the Whitehouse amendment to S. 761.

Please contact your Senators today and urge them to oppose the Hoeven/Manchin amendment to S. 761, and support the Whitehouse amendment to S. 761.  These votes will encourage the federal government to purchase greater quantities of wind power and other forms of renewable energy as federal buildings are renovated or constructed.

We appreciate your dedicated support for wind energy.
