Imagery of Confederate Army Flag in our Memory

Until I was 9 years old, growing up in the Land of Lincoln (Illinois), I had had no idea that it was even legal to wave a confederate flag–I thought that it was illegal or something only a neo-nazi might do.  Then my family moved to Missouri in 1970.  Suddenly it was everywhere.  In the 1970s we even came to see the so-called confederate army flag every week in the program DUKES OF HAZZARD.  How did we fall in love with this false imagery of the flag so easily after the rise of a strong civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s.

Kevin Anthony Stoda, a historian

What that flag means to me is—we’re standing on a street now that if you cross over that bridge—right?—you know not to be there at night. If I cross over that bridge and I drive into a yard with a Confederate flag, I know not to ask them for help if I have a flat tire. I just know that. I’m not saying it’s true. I’m saying that I know that. All right? I’m saying that I know that for a fact. So, what we have to do is stop acting like we don’t know that when somebody has a Confederate flag in their yard, don’t stop there.
