Dear Kevin, Last week, former Republican Presidential nominee John McCain claimed that President Obama was “directly responsible” for the violent and deadly carnage at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando. The Senator quickly backtracked, offering a Washington-style apology in which he clarified that he “misspoke” and didn’t mean to imply that President Obama was “personally” responsible, simply that it was his policies that led to the death of 49 people and the wounding of another 53. The Senator’s comments, despite his attempt to backtrack, are offensive and outrageously tone deaf at a moment when our nation needs solidarity and unity. Worse, his comments are also a distortion of the truth and must be called out for what they are: lies. We’ve written a longer rebuttal, which you can read here, that points out that it is Sen. McCain’s own preferred policies that have, in fact, led to the violence and instability we see in the Middle East today. But John McCain is not alone. For years, hawks and neocons on the right have been allowed to lie their way into wars and duck accountability for the failures of their policy. Their disastrous policies have cost us trillions of dollars, thousands of American lives, and unleashed chaos and violence throughout the Middle East. Their solution is even more of the same, and if we don’t fight them, that’s exactly what will happen. But we won’t let them. We are ramping up our work to hold politicians and pundits accountable for their dangerous policies and disgusting lies. We’re going to not only do more to publicize the truth, like our story about John McCain, but we’re going to fight hard to make sure our country ends its endless wars and pursues policies that will lead to peace.
