When people first get introduced to the idea of amplified pain, I can see when they really get it. They lean forward, and start asking questions about exactly what’s going on to cause it in their bodies.
But there’s one question people avoid asking. When they finally get to ask it, it’s usually as a last question on the list – the one they’re most worried about.
Here’s the question: what if I’ve had this pain for so long it’s set in place? What if it’s permanent?
Here’s the thing: nothing in our bodies or brains is permanent. Our body’s cells are constantly being remade. And our brains – years ago, it was believed we were born with a set amount of brain cells, and once neural pathways were laid down – that was it.
Which is completely wrong. Our brains are the most flexible adaptable part of our body. People who’ve suffered from a stroke where part of their brain has died are able to learn to move again, because their brain finds away to adapt around the damage and create new pathways.
So – categorically no.
Even if you’ve been in pain for years, you can start retraining your pain system and learning new ways to reverse the process that has amplified your pain.
