Chris Matthews has a meltdown, how the White House is gaslighting the media and Americans

A Trump adviser may have broken federal law, Chris Matthews has a meltdown, how the White House is gaslighting the media and Americans, and more …

Beyond the notable Media Matters work below, here are some other things I’ve read this week: Robinson Meyer on a final attempt to stop the Dakota Access pipeline, Madison Malone Kircher on how Wikipedia has banned the Daily Mail, Dahlia Lithwick on Trump’s war on the judiciary, and Jack Smith IV on the weird new symbol that white nationalists are rallying around.

Trump Adviser May Have Broken Federal Law, Media Yawn

A top Donald Trump adviser may have violated the Logan Act. The Washington Post reported that Trump’s national security adviser Michael Flynn spoke with Russians about sanctions during the transition. Beyond possibly breaking federal law, Vice President Mike Pence at the time denied that this conversation took place. Most morning shows downplayed the bombshell. The Today Show and Fox & Friendsignored the story entirely. When Trump took questions at a press conference, he only called on outlets owned by Rupert Murdoch — and neither asked about the scandal. This story isn’t going away.

MSNBC Meltdown After Muslim Ban Ruling

When appellate judges refused to reinstate Trump’s Muslim ban this week, right-wing conservatives had a meltdown. Fox News hosted a hate group leader, preemptively blamed the judges in the event of a terror attack, and said the ban was aimed at “Joe Schmo Muhammad.” But the most hysterical reactions came from MSNBC. Joe Scarborough furiously attacked the decision as “politicized.” And Chris Matthews was completely unhinged at the decision, to the point where he was essentially calling for proto-fascism: “I like presidents to be strong, even this one.” It was more evidence that NBC News is veering to the right.

Swearing in of Jeff Sessions

Trump Forces Outlets To Use State Media

Jeff Sessions was sworn in as the Attorney General (a move that excited white nationalists, neo-Nazis, and former members of the KKK). When Trump made remarks at Sessions’ swearing in, he forced outlets to use state media to cover it. The Trump camp has repeatedly blacklisted journalists and outlets, both on the campaign trail and in the White House.

Sean Spicer

The Breibart Spicer Trainwreck

Taking a break from repeatedly lying from behind the White House lecturn, press secretary Sean Spicer granted an exclusive interview to white nationalist outlet Breitbart, which was formerly run by Trump’s chief strategist Stephen Bannon and now is at the center of the so-called “alt-right.” The interview was a complete trainwreck, prompting widespread mockery of both Breitbart and Spicer.

Trump and his cronies are not just lying. They are trying to make the media and everyday Americans question their own sanity. This is how Trump is gaslighting America:

Cable news discussions of Trump’s Muslim ban are missing actual Muslims. We reviewed a week’s worth of coverage — and found barely any Muslims were invited on.
