Trump allies try to explain away mass protests

“At most year to defend the Republic,” conspiracy theories over mass anti-Trump protests, neo-Nazis get some bad news, and more …

Beyond the notable Media Matters work below, here are some other things I’ve read this week: Adrienne Lafrance on journalism and Facebook, Dale Beran on 4chan and Donald Trump, John Ganz on Lenin and Stephen Bannon, and Alexandra Petri on Trump running for reelection.

Trump allies try to explain away mass protests

There have been massive protests over the first month of Trump’s presidency, including the Women’s March and widespread protests against Trump’s Muslim ban. Pro-Trump propaganda outlets are now blaming these protests on a so-called Obama “shadow government.”

The fix is in at the White House

Amidst the Flynn scandal, for three straight press conferences with foreign leaders Donald Trump only called on right-wing media outlets. After the third, CNN reporter Jim Acosta called out Trump’s tactics, saying “the fix is in.”

“At most a year to defend the Republic”

Donald Trump was at his most unhinged when he held a press conference on Thursday, repeatedly lashingout at the media. Right-wing media absolutely loved it — and so did anti-Semites and neo-Nazis. After the press conference, Trump’s team pushed out a “Mainstream Media Accountability Survey” urging his followers to “fight back against the media’s attacks and deceptions.” The stakes for Trump’s war on the presscould not be higher. In response to Trump’s growing war on the press, respected Yale historian Timothy Snyder urges action in response to Trump and his chief strategist Stephen Bannon. Snyder warns that“we have at most a year to defend the Republic” against their assaults.

Bad News For Neo-Nazis

Media Matters recently noted that anti-Semitic and Holocaust-denying websites were using Google’s AdSense for revenue, in apparent violation of Google’s terms of use. In some good news, Google has since terminated their relationship with the websites, cutting off their source of funding. The tech giant still has more work to do with fake news, though.
