Dear Mr. Stoda,
Thank you for contacting me regarding ongoing efforts in Congress to repeal and replace Obamacare. I appreciate hearing from my constituents throughout this entire process.
As you may know, The American Health Care Act (AHCA) was introduced as the first phase of the Republican plan to repeal and replace the failing Obamacare. The two main congressional committees that share jurisdiction over this law recently began consideration of the provisions included in the AHCA. The House Committee on Energy and Commerce, of which I am a member, reported out their version favorably on March 9th. The bill must now be approved by the House Budget Committee before ultimately coming before the full House of Representatives for a vote.
Obamacare has failed to live up to its promise to provide affordable health insurance options for all Americans. The AHCA aims to meet this challenge by strengthening Medicaid for millions of Americans and determining a fair level of funding for each state based on their Medicaid population. The bill also repeals harmful taxes and mandates that are crushing small businesses and provides a tax credit to help Americans purchase coverage tailored to their specific needs.
However, building a better, patient-focused health care system will take more than the passage of one bill. As Congress moves forward with consideration of the AHCA, Secretary Price at the Department of Health and Human Services will continue using the regulatory flexibility granted to his office to deregulate the marketplace, lower costs, and stabilize the insurance markets. Lastly, my colleagues and I in the House of Representatives will continue working on a legislative strategy including provisions allowing the sale of insurance across state lines, medical liability reforms, and further flexibility to states in managing their Medicaid programs.
Again, thank you for contacting me on this important issue. Hearing the views of all Missourians gives me the opportunity to better understand how important issues could impact the people of the Seventh District and the future interests of the nation.
