Fox conspiracy came from Russian media, public broadcasting in grave danger, the fringe right gets a helping hand at the paper of record, and more …
Kevin,
Beyond the notable Media Matters work below, here are some other things I’ve read this week: Peter Beinart on how a far-right conspiracy theorist found a captive audience in Trump’s White House, Megha Rajagopalan on targeting of Asian Muslims by internet trolls and fake news, Nona Willis Aronowitz on misogynists in sheep’s clothing, and Alexandra Petri on Trump’s budget.

Trump and Fox & Friends caused an international incidentIt is now confirmed: Fox News analyst Andrew Napolitano got a British intelligence conspiracy theory from Russian state media. The connection was apparent days ago, before Sean Spicer repeated the absurd accusation against President Obama in the White House briefing room. Fox anchor Shep Smith made very clear that Fox News does not stand behind Napolitano’s claim. Napolitano is a 9/11 truther and Trump favorite who has called into Alex Jones’ show. Trump’s endless consumption and embrace of Fox News has now caused an international incident. |

Sean Trump’s budget devastates public broadcastingDonald Trump released his budget this week, and it included massive cuts to non-defense programs. The press should describe Trump’s budget as the revanchist statement that it is. The worst cuts are to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. While Fox News is cheering this on, award-winning journalist Bill Moyers told Media Matters that smaller, rural PBS stations in particular would be hardest hit, and could possibly fold.
Take action: Sign the petition telling Congress to save public broadcasting. After you’ve signed, share it with your friends and family! |

Trump lost in court, and Fox News is one big reason whyDonald Trump’s Muslim ban 2.0 lost in federal court — and an appearance by Trump official Stephen Miller on Fox News appears to be a chief reason why. Conservative media were furious, and soon there was a new theory from fringe “alt-right” media: that President Obama secretly conspired with the Hawaiian judge. Sean Hannity even suggested that Obama did drugs with the federal judge. |

Hate is still bad for businessBreitbart has the same problem that Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh have had: Advertisers despise hate. So far, 1,500 companies have dropped the far right outlet as a result of an online campaign. |

Featured PostThe public editor of The New York Times helped out an “alt-right” harassment campaign by chastising a journalist of color at the paper for making a pun about dogs. Seriously: http://mm4a.org/2nwaIT9 |
