What does Hosea say to us about Love and God?

For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice,
the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

Hosea 6:6

The prophet Hosea criticizes the Northern Kingdom of ancient Israel for its failure to live justly, and connects this to its cultic worship of other gods. The priests and people seemed to think that if they kept Yahweh’s cultic feasts, that it was okay for them to dabble with other gods on the side and commit violent crimes against the community. They behaved as if the point of cultic feasts was to sate Yahweh and ensure their own prosperity rather than to strengthen the covenant bond between Yahweh and the community and lead to love of God and neighbor.
