Washington, DC—Progressive Congress Action Fund, an inside-outside strategy organization that connects grassroots organizations with progressive Members of Congress,  released the following statement in response to the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast Bomb (MOAB) strike in Afghanistan:

“Today, the United States dropped the biggest non-nuclear bomb ever used in military combat. This marks the first time the United States has utilized the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast Bomb (MOAB), known as the ‘Mother of All Bombs,’ in battle, said Dr. Gabriela Lemus, President of Progressive Congress Action Fund. “The MOAB is the largest non-nuclear bomb in our arsenal, and its use to target ISIS without the advice and consent of Congress raises serious concerns about the potential for the United States’ engagement in unchecked use of military force and blanket authorization for endless war.

“The President of the United States must answer to Congress and to the American people regarding his long-term strategy for the War in Afghanistan, now in its 16th year, and his strategy for defeating ISIS. These protracted struggles do not have easy solutions, and it is imperative that the President seriously heed Congress in their role to advise and consent regarding the use of military force.  Any targeted strike carries the grave risk of civilian casualties, and a MOAB is the next-closest thing to a nuclear blast that we have in our arsenal.  The potential risks associated with such a strike must be weighed heavily, and Congress has not only the right but the responsibility to carefully review any authorization of the use of such a weapon.

“Once again, we call for an immediate and urgent review of the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF). Furthermore, we support Congresswoman Barbara Lee’s legislation, H.R. 1229, which would repeal the 2001 AUMF. The MOAB strike underscores the urgent need for such legislation.”
