Council for a Livable World

Dear Kevin,

When I was a member of Congress, I saw some crazy things. Here’s one I’ll never forget: The Director of National Intelligence couldn’t answer any of my questions about the number of contractors in our intelligence agencies. It turns out that no one knew how much money these contractors were costing taxpayers!

Amazingly, the problem is far worse at the Pentagon.

There, service contracting has contributed to an ever-expanding “shadow government” that costs over a hundred billion dollars annually. Shifting services from federal employees to contractors can significantly increase costs. One study found that the average annual contractor made far more money than federal employees performing comparable services.

President Eisenhower once said, “We must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.”

We need smarter spending, not more spending, especially for the only federal agency that has never passed an audit. Will you donate $3 to help us hold the Pentagon accountable to taxpayers? We can’t do it without you.

Thank you for being with us.

Sincerely,

John Tierney
Executive Director, Council for a Livable World
Member of Congress (former)
