Friends, I would like to urge you to contact your two Senators and Representative asking them to co-sponsor a bill to prohibit the President’s first-use nuclear strike without a declaration of war by Congress. Senator Edward J. Markey (D-MA) and Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-CA) have introduced S. 200 and H.R. 669, respectively, the Restricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act of 2017. The Markey bill has been co-sponsored by five Senators: Feinstein (CA), Franken (MN), Merkley (OR), Sanders (VT) and Van Hollen (MD). The Lieu bill has 32 co-sponsors; click here for a list. It is unconscionable that any one person – no matter who it is– has the sole ability to end civilization as we know it. As it stands, President Trump can simply launch a nuclear weapon on a whim and no one can stop him. As the text of the bills state, this legislation is necessary because: Nuclear weapons are uniquely powerful weapons that have the capability to instantly kill millions of people, create long-term health and environmental consequences throughout the world, directly undermine global peace, and put the United States at existential risk from retaliatory nuclear strikes. For maximum impact, please contact your Members of Congress today. You can identify your Representative/Senators by clicking here. And thencall them by contacting the Capitol Hill Switchboard: (202) 224-3121. Senator Markey and Representative Lieu held a press conference yesterday announcing that 500,000 citizens have signed petitions in support of their bills which are being delivered to Capitol Hill. You can add your voice today. Call your U.S. Representative and U.S. Senators to support the Restricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act today! All my best, John Isaacs, Senior Fellow |

- PART 2: Important Part of Text from George Harrison’s Final Interview (1997)-- “What are we doing on this planet?”
Dear Kevin,
This is amazing! Over the last couple months, nearly half a million Americans have stood up to stop Donald Trump from being able to singlehandedly launch a nuclear war. And yesterday, we brought your voices to Congress! Together with partners for 17 other national organizations, we stood alongside Senators Ed Markey and Chris Van Hollen and Representatives Ted Lieu, Barbara Lee, and Pramila Jayapal to deliver your signatures to stop Trump’s absolute power over America’s nuclear arsenal.
These champions of peace have heard our voices, and they’ve responded by introducing legislation to ensure no President, especially not one as reckless as Donald Trump, can ever unilaterally launch a nuclear war. Now they need our help!
We need you to call your Members of Congress and ask them to co-sponsor S. 200 and H.R. 669. Simply call (202) 224-3121 to be connected to the U.S. Capitol switchboard.
Right now, if Donald Trump decides to launch a nuclear weapon – even if we’re not under attack – there’s nothing that can stop him. That’s because under the current law, once the President says “go,” there’s just 4 minutes until the deadliest weapons ever created are launched.
This is not the way the system is supposed to work and Congress has the power to change it, but only if we make them.
As Representative Ted Lieu said, “there is no way the Framers would have given one man the power to destroy humanity.” Thankfully, we have a chance to make a change. Rep. Lieu and Sen. Ed Markey have introduced legislation in both houses of Congress to make a change, and they need our help.
Getting in touch with your Members of Congress is easy. Call the US Capitol Switchboard (202) 224-3121 and simply follow the prompts.
Once you have reached the office of your representative, politely ask them to support the bill. Here’s some sample language.
For the House of Representatives:
Hi, my name is __________ and I live in Representative ________________ ‘s district. I am calling today to ask him/her to support H.R. 669 which would limit the president’s power to launch a nuclear strike. I believe that no one person should be able to launch a nuclear war without the authorization of Congress.
For the Senate:
Hi, my name is __________ and I live in Senator ________________ ‘s state. I am calling today to ask him/her to support S. 200 which would limit the president’s power to launch a nuclear strike. I believe that no one person should be able to launch a nuclear war without the authorization of Congress.
After you’ve called once, simply hang up, and call back two more times until you’ve spoken with your Representative and both your Senators.
No one person – and definitely not someone as erratic and reckless as Donald Trump – should ever be able to single-handedly start a war that would destroy the entire planet. Half a million of us have already spoken up once. Now it’s time to take the next step towards change.
Call (202) 224-3121 now to be connected to your Member of Congress.
Thank you for working for peace,
