Trump’s DOD budget is exploiting more and more women

Thursday, June 1, 2017

Dear Kevin,

Trump’s budget was released last week, and as we suspected, the Pentagon gets a massive boost in funds.

And how is this paid for? By selling out women.

In the new budget, funding for programs that tend to benefit women – including Medicaid, Pell Grants and subsidized student loans, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for Women, Infants, and Children – were cut twice as deeply as those that primarily benefit men.[1]

Trump is putting defense contractors and wealthy donors ahead of the good of the country – and ahead of women. WAND is launching a campaign to make public just how harmful his new budget is to women, children, and the security of our nation.

Will you chip in $10 to stand against Trump’s harmful budget?

The Pentagon was the clear winner in the budget proposal put out last week. The Department of Defense would receive $574.5 billion, a 10% increase from the last full-year budget. National security spending, including defense-related spending from the Energy and Justice departments, would total $668 billion – one-third of all global military spending.[2]

Funding cuts aren’t the only way the new budget is harmful to women.

It comes as no surprise, given Trump’s war-mongering in his first 100 days, that while the Pentagon saw a hefty increase, State Department diplomatic and foreign relations divisions suffered a 30% cut, vastly increasing our chances of going to war.Programs to support global work to address climate change and protect abused women were eliminated outright.[3]

The proposal bars pro-choice family clinics from benefiting from any federally-funded program, which means funding is eliminated for mammograms, Zika virus prevention, and wellness checks that millions of women depend on every year. These programs also help mitigate the spread of pandemics.

And Trump’s budget proposal eliminates the student loan forgiveness program that benefits teachers, nurses, and public defenders – the vast majority of whom are women.[4] Additionally, it eliminates subsidized student loans, long the mainstay of students working to lift themselves out of poverty.

Trump plans to pay for a bloated defense budget by declaring an outright war on women – but we are not going to let him get away with it. We are putting our Women Legislators’ Lobby to work and spreading the word about how harmful Trump’s budget is to women, here and around the globe.

Will you chip in $10 to help us defeat Trump’s anti-woman budget?

In Peace,
