What are vouchers for democracy?

Every Voice

Have you heard about the new Democracy Vouchers program in Seattle?

It’s an exciting new system, where residents of Seattle can receive $100 in Democracy Vouchers to contribute to any participating candidate of their choice in city elections! That’s right – every single Seattleite now has the opportunity to have their voice heard in local elections.

Democracy Vouchers break the pattern of candidates raising money from wealthy special interests and then once they’re in office, giving those same special interests the laws and tax breaks that they want.

The 2017 elections are the first using Democracy Vouchers, after Every Voice worked alongside local partners to pass the voter-approved initiative creating the program in November 2015. Most eligible candidates have opted-in to participating in the program, and Seattle residents have already given more than 15,000 vouchers to candidates!

Democracy Vouchers significantly expands the pool of potential campaign donors – encouraging candidates to spend more time talking to their constituents, no matter their age, income, or past campaign contributions.
