Both my 80-year-old father and my 6-year-old son have cancer, so Congress’ dogged determination to repeal Obamacare feels deeply personal. After the American Health Care Act (AHCA) passed the House of Representatives, I felt like someone had punched me in the gut.

Right now, Congress is trying to dismantle healthcare. Thirteen men in the Senate are working with zero public scrutiny or transparency to write the Senate version of the AHCA by the July 4th legislative recess. This rush job means we still don’t know the specifics of what the Senate Healthcare bill would include.

What we do know is that this bill could dismantle our entire healthcare system and take away health insurance from nearly 23 million people. It could also cause spikes in premiums for low income families, seniors, and those with pre-existing conditions. We have to let our legislators know that this attempt to repeal Obamacare, and deny millions the coverage they need, is unacceptable.

We have met so many others in similar situations: children, parents, and partners with cancer, and their loved ones, determined to thrive in the face of the devastation that cancer wreaks.

The AHCA’s version of healthcare isn’t going to give people with cancer and the people who love them what we need. Instead, it will make it harder for cancer families, harder for elders an d children struggling with cance r in our communities, and harder for everyone to access the health care we all deserve.
