LifeLine is an Expensive Fraud???

This is just unacceptable, Kevin.

For years I’ve called out “Lifeline”, a federally-subsidized phone program, for wasting taxpayer dollars—and just recently, I released a new report from the government’s top watchdog agency showing just how bad the fraud and abuse really is.

GRAPHIC: Breaking: Report requested by Claire McCaskill shows massive fraud and waste in 'Lifeline' phone program

I hope this report is enough to move my colleagues to join me in taking action to reform this program and better protect your tax dollars.

Some of the worst findings:

  • Auditors of the program couldn’t verify that 36% of the Lifeline customers examined were actually eligible
  • 63% of fake applications to the program were approved
  • Each year, at least $1.2 million of taxpayers’ money is going to fake or deceased individuals
  • 3rd party contractors were paid on an incentive-based system tied to how many people they enrolled

As a former Missouri State Auditor, and someone who has made rooting out government waste, fraud, and abuse a central focus as your Senator, I’m outraged that federal agencies fell asleep at the wheel and mismanaged Missourians’ hard-earned dollars.

It’s time Congress and the federal agencies in charge of Lifeline wake up and step up to fix this problem—and I’m not going to stop pushing until they do.

Are you outraged as well? Share this report on Facebook and Twitter.

All the best,
