Overview of the Context, Problem and Opportunity

Overview of the Context, Problem and Opportunity

What problem or opportunity will your project help address?

The Central America/Mexico region is one of the most vulnerable in the world to extremes

of weather due to climate change. Given this vulnerability to weather extremes, farmers in

the region need more options to diversify their food crops in order to gain increased food

security. When a farm family is dependent upon what they grow for what they have to eat,

they need to plant several different food crops for back up if some fail due to changing

climate conditions. That is why Tempisque rice is an important additional for increased

food security. Corn, the traditional staple food, requires reliable water at specific times

during the growing season. It is also susceptible to high winds, especially when combined

with excessive rain, causing corn stocks to fall over and then rot. “

The United Nations World Food Program gives this description of Guatemala on their

webpage, Feb. 2024. “Guatemala is among the 10 countries that are most vulnerable to

natural disasters and the effects of climate change. Over the past three years, extended

dry seasons have had a severe impact on the livelihoods of subsistence farmers, who rely

on rain-fed agriculture, especially in the Dry Corridor.” (The Dry Corridor is where

FUNDAMARCOS will expand its work with this grant.) “As a result, the prevalence of

stunting in children under 5 is one of the highest in the world – and the highest in Latin

America and the Caribbean. At 46.5 percent nationally, the stunting rate climbs up to 70

percent in some departments,” “As a result, the prevalence of stunting in children under 5

is one of the highest in the world – and the highest in Latin America and the Caribbean.“

“Stunting in children under 5 exceeds 50 percent in the departments of Alta and Baja

Verapaz, Sololá and Chimaltenango.” The Tempisque Rice program is working in Baja

Verapaz and Chimaltenango.”

!

The United Nations World Food Program has a similar analysis in Honduras. “Hurricanes

and prolonged heavy rains ruin crops. When it’s not raining, prolonged droughts cause

crops to wither and worsen food security for those who are already hungry.” “In Honduras

more than 60 percent of the population are living in poverty. Almost a fifth of children

under 5 years of age are stunted (impaired growth due to malnutrition). “ “

!

The 4 organizations of the consortium are excellently positioned to improve the food

security of these most vulnerable populations that the United Nations World Food

Program is describing. They are working in exactly the regions named in the UN Food

Program quotes. These organizations are apt to have success because they are in the

struggle for food security for the long term and understand that important widespread

changes in agriculture take years of work. Also, their employees are local people working

locally. Obviously there is a great need to make food production more resilient and

productive in Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Mexico. The Tempisque Rice

Program has now shown that Tempisque rice has significant resistance to climate

variations and that widespread increases in its production could greatly improve food

security for the children the United Nations Food Program is describing
