9 Impeachable Offenses and More!!!

This week, a federal jury convicted the President’s former campaign chairman of eight felonies, while Trump’s lawyer accused him of directing an illegal conspiracy. We’re living through a constitutional crisis, and every day we learn more. Need to Impeach breaks down all the big news in our Friday Need to Know emails. Don’t miss out — sign up to get these updates each week.
Leading Off
The walls are closing in on Donald Trump. The news this week did not end with his former campaign chairman and former personal attorney racking up 16 guilty charges between them on Tuesday. Federal prosecutors granted immunity to Allen Weisselberg, the longtime chief financial officer of the Trump Organization, for providing information in the investigation into hush-money payments made during Trump’s presidential campaign. Since Trump was elected, Weisselberg has been leading the Trump Organization, along with Trump’s sons Don Jr. and Eric, and is said to know “where all the financial bodies are buried” in Trump’s businesses.
Federal prosecutors also gave immunity to David Pecker, the chairman of tabloid publisher American Media Inc., for information in the Michael Cohen probe. A longtime friend of Trump’s, Pecker could have valuable information on the President.
Sweet Sixteen
Tuesday was one of the of the most damning days of any presidency in recent memory. Paul Manafort, Trump’s former campaign chairman, was convicted on eight counts of tax and bank fraud, and Trump’s former personal attorney Michael Cohen pleaded guilty to eight counts of campaign finance violations and other crimes.
By admitting under oath that Trump directed him to commit a felony, Cohen implicated Trump in an illegal conspiracy to defraud the American public and influence the 2016 presidential election. Watch Tom explain the consequences of these 16 guilty charges:
Donald Trump is an unindicted co-conspirator. The last President of the United States to be an unindicted co-conspirator was Richard Nixon — and we all know how that ended.
But we can’t rely on this Congress to impeach this president or convince him to resign — or, for that matter, to persuade Trump to do anything to help the country instead of himself.
So it’s up to us. Together, we all need to make our voices heard loud and clear in the November 6 midterms by electing a new Congress that will actually do its job and act on Trump’s crimes, corruption, and nine impeachable offenses.
Please, consider requesting a packet of notecards to write to fellow voters.Writing a personal note to potential voters has proven to be an effective way to encourage potential voters to cast a ballot. More than 27,000 petition-signers have already signed up. Will you send notecards to get out the vote in battleground districts?
Oh, But There’s More
Before the Cohen pleas and Manafort verdict, Trump teased the idea of his directly meddling in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. “I can go in, and I could do whatever — I could run it if I want,” Trump said. Although it is hard to imagine anyone being more effective running the investigation than Mueller — whose probe has led to over 100 criminal counts against 32 individuals and six guilty pleas already — there are really no words to describe the lunacy of Trump running an investigation into himself. Then again, he has been talking to his lawyers about potentially issuing pardons in the Russia investigation.

Cohen’s bad week got worse when the state of New York subpoenaed him as part of its investigation into the fraudulent Trump Foundation. This came after Cohen’s attorney said Cohen had information of interest to the Mueller investigation and the New York Attorney General.

Lost in the news Tuesday, the Justice Department charged Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) and his wife with spending over $250,000 in campaign funds on their own personal expenses, from trips to Italy and Hawaii to dental work. The corruption of Trump’s cronies is never-ending.
Hunter was the second congressman to support Trump’s presidential bid, following Rep. Chris Collins (R-NY), who was also indicted two weeks ago for insider trading. From his lawyer to his top campaign staff to his national security adviser to his early supporters in Congress — Trump surrounds himself with criminals.
Impeachment Push
Time Magazine published an interview with Tom this week about the push to flip the House and impeach the President. As to candidates who have not come out for impeachment, Tom asked in a Variety interview: “What is their solution to the lawlessness and recklessness of this president?” And NTI’s Lead Strategist Kevin Mack wrote an Op-Ed in the Daily Beast about why Democrats should be talking about impeachment.
Supreme Court Confirmation Hearings Continuing as Planned
Senate Democrats are rightly calling to delay Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings after Cohen’s guilty pleas. “It is unseemly for the President of the United States to be picking a Supreme Court justice who could soon be effectively a juror in a case involving the President himself,” Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said.
Meanwhile, Republicans are happy to proceed with hearings on September 4 as if this was a normal confirmation process in a normal presidency. Susan Collins, whose vote could tip the scale, met with Kavanaugh and is convinced he believes Roe v. Wade is settled law. We know this is disingenuous: Beyond the fact that Trump promised to pick nominees who would overturn the landmark case, Kavanaugh and the Court could still restrict reproductive rights and effectively outlaw abortion without even touching Roe v. Wade.
This Sunday, Americans all across the country are uniting to protest Kavanaugh. We’re taking part in “Unite for Justice,” a national day of action — folks are hosting rallies in all 50 states to demand their senators oppose Kavanaugh. Click here to find a rally near you.
Quick Hits from the Week
  • The Trump administration is choosing polluters’ profits over public safety, announcing new coal regulations that could cause up to 1,400 more deathseach year.
  • The White House blocked a bill with bipartisan support in the Senate that would protect our country’s election systems from cyberattacks.
